Ok, folks, as Dr. Phil says, "It's time to get real!"

Raise your hand if you have a pile of stuff like this waiting to be listed on eBay. (I'm seeing a few hands slowly going up.....) Don't worry, you are in good company. I am here to push you out of your comfort zone and tell you, "If you have it, list it!" If you are using the excuse that your item is out of season, and probably won't sell anyway, you are now busted. Here are a few of my and my daughter's sales for the past 2 weeks (this is June) that are WINTER items! The season is irrelevant - anything can sell at any time, and if your items are in a bag or box in the corner of your office waiting to be listed, well, you are just missing opportunities to make money.

My daughter sold these Columbia snow boots last night. Bought at a garage sale in April for $3. They are going to a buyer in the state of Georgia! Really? A pair of snow boots sold in June to a buyer in one of the warmest parts of the USA. Not a huge profit, but a sale nonetheless.

We bought this cashmere sweater for $5 at Goodwill recently. It sold on June 2 for $19.97.

Another cashmere sweater sold on Best Offer for $14.97:

So no more excuses! Winter clothes and boots sell in the summer time, too. If you are not shipping internationally, be mindful that the seasons are opposite on the other side of the world and international customers buy winter clothing when it is summer in the USA. (Check out my International Shipping Tutorial to learn how to ship internationally.)

So put on a pot of coffee, put a movie in the DVD player and get busy listing! Customers all over the world are waiting.

I'm excited to announce another Lesson on Demand. If you are not shipping internationally on eBay, there is no time like the present to get started. The number one action eBay sellers can take to increase sales is to offer international shipping. If you are not shipping internationally, you are leaving money on the table, and not a little bit of money but a lot of money! eBay has 98 million registered users and 49% of them are outside of the USA. These global customers have money to spend on American products and you can be one of the people who provides the items they want to buy.

This is a comprehensive multi-media lesson that contains the following:

30 minute MP3 audio lesson explains:

Advantages of international shipping
Insurance options
Flat rate vs calculated shipping
Disclaimers for your listings

19 minute video tutorial explains:

How to set up eBay shipping preferences
How to fill out customs form
How to print labels after a sale

29 page PDF file explains:

10 reasons eBay sellers should offer international shipping
Restricted items that cannot be shipped internationally
How to set up international shipping costs for eBay buyers
International shipping services and options
Printing international shipping labels after a sale
Insurance options
Packaging materials and restrictions
Country specific restrictions (what can and can't be shipped where)
Suggestions for problematic countries to exclude
Every problem you may encounter is both preventable and solvable

When done correctly, international shipping does not cost the seller any extra fees, the buyer pays the shipping fees, there are no additional eBay fees or charges, and the end result is more sales for the seller. Risks are minimized by adding insurance to shipments and excluding countries that are problematic to work with.

This course is designed for sellers who have some experience selling on eBay and wish to offer international shipping. Instant download once Paypal payment is received. Cost of this lesson is $19.95.

I am excited to announce my new podcasting channel on BlogTalkRadio! I'm structuring these podcasts as educational in nature, sharing what I know and what I have learned about ecommerce over the last 10 years. Podcasts will be 15-20 minutes in length and focus on teaching a specific aspect of the business. I have some interesting guests lined up so you will want to subscribe and check for new episodes daily. You can listen to podcasts from your computer while you work or from your phone on iTunes. (It will take a couple of weeks for the iTunes feed to start, and I will post a link to the iTunes feed on a future blog post.)

Right now, I am using the audio upload feature, so the shows aren't live yet, therefore listeners aren't able to call in. But that will change in the future. At this point, the podcasts focus on some basics for newer sellers to use for reference in later episodes. So far, the following lessons have been posted:

eBay Return Policy - Why Every Seller Needs One

The Importance of Record Keeping

I have some fun ideas for recurring shows, like "You sold WHAT on eBay?" Where sellers share good money makers that are hiding in plain sight. Making money on eBay isn't just finding and selling the obvious collectibles like Hummel figurines and baseball cards. The key to making money on eBay is learning to recognize items that have value in the eBay marketplace, but may look like junk to a less savvy seller.

I would love to hear your ideas for shows and topics that you need help with or are interested in learning about. I've been coaching private clients of all levels since 2009 and have a lot of great material to share. We can all learn a lot by talking and listening to each other. Everyone's ecommerce journey is different - beginners to advanced seller, we all bring something valuable to the table to share and help each other prosper!

Check out my new show, Online Selling with Suzanne Wells and be sure to subscribe either through Blog Talk Radio or iTunes.

One area that I get many questions about is international shipping. Shipping to other areas of the world could be lucrative for eBay sellers. You would be surprised at the items many sellers are shipping to buyers in other countries around the world. If you are looking to take your eBay business to the next level and have not reached out to buyers in other countries, you may want to look into it.
On top of reading my articles about international shipping, you may want to register for this webinar. DYMO Endicia and Forrester Research are teaming up to offer the FREE webinar. “Demystifying International Shipping – From Australia to Zimbabwe” will be presented on Tuesday, December 26 at 1pm EST/10am PST.
The webinar, presented by Zia Daniell Wigder, will cover these topics:

  • Typical challenges and solutions to selling internationally
  • How to simplify international shipping
  • The pros and cons of international transactional websites

One of my clients was kind enough to mention the discount shipping insurance offered by InkFrog. You may already know that when you ship a package First Class international through USPS, Paypal, or Stamps.com, there is no option for insurance. You can only insure Priority International mail.

On Inkfrog, the shipping insurance is directly integrated into their system is a package insurance program backed by Shipsurance. The cost is $1.25 per $100 of value on your international shipment. Now, you still have to pay the $9.95 monthly fee, but this may be a solution for those of you who are looking for a way to insure First Class International packages.

If you are not an InkFrog user and don't want to pay the monthly $9.95 fee, you can go directly to ShipSurance.com and purchase the insurance there.

Schedule a USPS Pickup (I have a standing pickup every day for 10 packages. You don't have to know the exact number - just estimate based on your weekly volume. Some days I don't have any. You can schedule pickups up to 3 months in advance. The scheduling feature just helps your post office know what to expect, and your carrier gets paid a little more for the scheduled pickups - and they like that! I leave my pickup at the mailbox in a tub every day, unless it is raining or I wont' be home. If it is raining, my mail carrier knows to blow the horn and I bring them out.)
