By now you know how much I LOVE cashmere. Not only is it the finest fabric in the world - luxuriously soft, comfortable, and gorgeous - but it holds it value no matter what. Here is a great idea for selling damaged cashmere sweaters (and other items) on eBay and Etsy.

The latest trend with crafters is re-purposing items. Re-purposing means taking an item (either usable or not) and using it again for a long term purpose. For example, take a plastic milk jug and make it into a bird feeder or take old cabinet hardware and make it into a piece of jewelry. (Click here for an article about selling old cabinet hardware on eBay just for re-purposing.)

So, eBay has collided with the re-purposing movement and we are now seeing listings for "Cashmere cutter." These are listings of several pure cashmere sweaters, maybe with slight damage, that crafters buy to make into other things such as scarves, baby items, blankets, or doggie sweaters. Here are a few recently completed listings:

Lot of 10 cashmere sweaters sold for $38

7 pure cashmere sweaters sold for $36

When selling a cashmere sweater, try to sell it on its own first. I usually get between $20 and $35 for a used 100% cashmere sweater in good condition. For those that don't sell after a while, or that are damaged (have holes or stains), list in a lot once you have accumulated a few. Be sure to put keywords like "cashmere cutter, craft, fabric, and material" in your listing so that you will be found on searches. If you Google "cashmere cutter" you will see eBay listings at the top of the results.

For those of you wondering, "Should I sell winter items in the summer, or wait to list them in the fall?" My answer:

IF YOU HAVE IT, LIST IT! PEOPLE CAN'T BUY WHAT THEY CAN'T SEE.

Case in point, this used 100% cashmere sweater (Ralph Lauren Black Label) I sold today, June 17. I found this at a thrift store last week for $4.59. It sold for $49.95 today. The buyer is locates in New York, where the temperature was 85 degrees today. My profit on this item is about $43.

Why should you sell cashmere in the summer?

1. Cashmere is expensive and highly sought after. People look for it year round.

2. Some people are allergic to wool and synthetic fibers and will only buy cashmere.

3. If you are shipping internationally, the seasons will be opposite of ours in the 3SA.

4. People travel to locations where the weather is cold - even when it is summer in the USA. Maybe they are going on an Alaskan cruise. Maybe they are traveling to Australia or New Zealand where it is winter right now. Think global not local.

5. It was 90 degrees here today in Atlanta and the last thing on my mind was wearing a sweater - but I still sold this item. Even in the United States, there are locations that are chilly year round. Some people may work indoors where the air conditioning is cold. There are lots of reasons why someone may want a sweater in the summer time.

6. You can often find off-season items very inexpensively as the example above shows.

Expand your mind and think beyond your own zip code and your own climate. You can see from this example that even in the stifling heat of summer, I was able to turn $4.59 into $43 in a week's time selling a sweater. Gotta love eBay!

Happy Selling,

Kristi at Spend Less Save More sent in her success story:

I have been following your blog for a few months now & love it. I wanted to share a recent success with eBay. I purchased a Charter Club Cashmere Sweater at my local Good Will. I was surprised at how high it went for because it isn't really a name brand.

Here is Kristi's listing:

Kristi's cost - $3.59
eBay selling price - $51.88
Profit before fees - $48.29

Fantastic sale! There has been some discussion on my Facebook eBay group about selling cashmere year round. In my experience, it sells any time of year. Other sellers are discovering this, too. Worst case scenario - put the cashmere sweater on a fixed price listing for 30 days - the cost is only 20 cents.
